Northern Thailand – Le nord de la Thaïlande

Northern Thailand – Le nord de la Thaïlande

1. Update – Mise à jour

Hello everyone! After 5 weeks riding in Thailand, we crossed the border to Laos three days ago. We are now in Luang Prabang doing are Vietnamese visa and trying to chilax a bit before heading to Vientiane to pick up  Audrey’s dad, Robert, and his girlfriend, Marthe at the airport. They are going to ride with us for our last month on the road.  But first, here is our sum up of northern Thailand!

Here is the big picture of our trip so far!

 Route Singapore & Malaysia

2. Thailand- La Thaïlande

2.1 The weather – Les températures

We are now out of wet season and that feels awesome! Moreover, winds are now coming from the north, from China, so the days are fresher. Unfortunately, it meant as well head winds on the bike for most days traveling through northern Thailand.

2.2 Natural disaster – Les catastrophes naturelles

Northern Thailand is also struck by natural disasters. Since may 2017, abnormal quantity of rain has provoked floodings in different part of northern Thailand. It is unfortunately still actual. Here are some pictures of these floodings.

3. Thai inhabitants – Les thailandais

Thai people are still super nice with us. We are always (or almost) greeted with smiles, a couple of english words (if they know some) and sometimes with offerings (food or a free place to stay at night).

4.1 Nakhom Pathom

Max was in Nakhom Pathom in 2015 and was wishing to visit a friend, Shoot. So we made a happy detour to his place, and to visit his beautiful hometown. Thanks Shoot for hosting us!

Downtown Nakhom Pathom, there is a beautiful pagoda, surrounded by small markets. We had a nice stroll around it!

Once we got to the city of Kamphaeng Phet city, we needed a rest day. Thanks to KB, from South Korea, who confortably hosted us in his one room appartment. It was a pleasure meeting you! Wish you an amazing first biking tour as soon as you get home!

Kamphaeng Phet is home to ruins of the 14th and 15th century. Since 1991, it is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns.

4.5 Sukhothai

The most touristy attraction we did so far was Sukhothai historical park.

The Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, literally “Dawn of Happiness”, capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in what is now Northern Thailand. It is located near the modern city of Sukhothai, capital of the province with the same name. The city walls form a rectangle about 2 km east-west by 1.6 km north-south. There are 193 ruins on 70 square kilometers of land. (wikipedia, 2017)

4.7 Nan

In Nan (city), we were welcomed by awesome warmshower hosts, NantPaul and his family. On our rest day, we visited temples with NantPaul and went to his touring bike shop. Audrey got a new t-shirt and m@x could appreciate some good local coffee. His parents took us out for dinner in a beautiful restaurant along Nan river. Thank you so much to all of you. Hope to see soon again!

On our way to Laos, we had amazing views on rice fields while going up and downs the beautiful hills. Not as easy to ride as to enjoy the view 😉

10. Unexpected adventure

10.1 A night at the police station! – Une nuit à la station de police!

This day, was one of these days where it is difficult to plan the accomodation for the night. On internet, we couldn’t find any hotels in the area. It meant wild camping for that night! So we pedal until we had done approximately 80 km and then, started looking for a spot. Only a few kilometers later, Audrey spotted a sign with a picture of a bed. Is that our lucky day? Soon we realised it was a police station.  We manage to ask, showing the bed sign, where we could find a hotel. The police officer was super happy to tell us we could stay for free with him at the police station! He first offered m@x a small single bed room (very basic) but when he realised there was a woman with him, he cleaned up the second room of the police station to offer us a comfortable night of sleep! Thank you so much! It was Audrey’s first night in a police station!
